Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a Dream” speech impacted many and gave hope to people who were being mistreated because of race. His quote about being free at last started the crowd and got them riled up. Society has changed but there is still police brutality and racism going on today. I believe that the world will always have racism and police brutality but it can be greatly decreased. MLK Jr.’s speech had the power to move many and gave people hope.
The quote from the “I Have a Dream” speech, “Free at last! Free at last! God Almighty we are free at last!” got the crowd riled up and that was probably the most memorable quote from that speech. This shows the importance of the speech through one quote. This shows that even though MLK was just one person he had the hope of a whole nation. He could change history with one speech and change a nation with one group. Even though we learn in school about Malcom X and other people who try to gain equality MLK is the most famous and most known. He has a holiday and he has a whole month for him and the people who worked with him for equality. Even after all his work there is still racism and police brutality.
Police brutality has gone down and is controlled but still happens. The most recent case is the Ferguson shooting. The African American was attacking a police man so the police man reacted how he was trained. The whole town saw this as police brutality even though the kid was guilty. The town was set on fire and windows were broken. MLK didn’t want this rioting and racism. Another story is when a man was selling illegal cigarettes and the police was putting him under arrest and the man was cooperating. The officer then proceeded to put him in a choke hold and held him there till he passed out and later died. Racism still exists and will always be present.
My vision for the future is simple. Racism and discrimination will be around till the end of humanity. There will be more people and groups like MLK and they will affect the end result. You can never stop discrimination cause we’re all different. In nature animals leave out other animals. Police will also take it too far some times and maybe even beat some people but we don’t have to react with hate and riots. Luke 6:29 says, “If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.” NIV. Do not act upon emotions but instead rationality. When one of your kids is killed by a cop do not riot but instead stay home and mourn. Don’t burn down the city from which you live but celebrate the wonderful life of your kid. When you know you’re wrong don’t try and resist but instead wait for the time to state your case. Life will never be equal and safe or politically correct always. This will always be a problem but if we all work together it won’t be a problem of everyday. “ And the second is like it, ‘love your neighbor as yourself’.” Matthew 22:39 NIV.
In conclusion we will never be equal. The importance of MLK’s speech was that we will fight for the most equality we can get. The fact that people are still writing papers and learning about MLK means that he had enough of an impact on people. He had some wise advice and if we don’t start excepting people for how they are then we will hate and be hated by everyone.

This assignment was for a contest we were handed. We were trying to write the best paper we could about MLK Jr. This assignment was not that fun for me but I think i did well.
